I've just uploaded a new Beta version of my site which I've been developing recently. It's very experimental and in its early stages of development, but contains a number of ideas that I've been playing around with. If you want to follow its progress then I'll be posting details of future updates on my twitter feed. A brief summary follows...

JewelTube

is my new version of the youTube player. It was written using the YouTube APIs and Tools. New features are multi-lingual lyrics and skip points. There aren't many videos available at the moment as a number of Jewel videos have been removed from youTube recently and also it will only work with embeddable videos.

Visualizations

written using the Google Visualization API will give a graphical view of a number of Jewel statistics. At the moment there are two visualizations: songs by year, so you can see when Jewel was most prolific and when she was taking a break; albums by setlist, is Jewel still performing more songs from Pieces of You than any other album? More visualizations will be created soon.

Calendar
Past and future concert and TV details with a monthly view or a list view. Also has an option to view album by setlist visualizations. Currently only goes back to 2007, but more years will be added soon.

Songs
A Jewel song database with a visual tag interface. It allows you to select songs using various criteria eg songwriter; genre; album. At the moment this is far from complete, I've still to add a lot more data.

How are you able to get your music to your fans these days? After all, it’s much harder to sell physical CDs than it was when your first album came out back in ‘95.

Getting music to fans is easy. Getting fans to pay for music is hard. With the Internet, you can get fans songs anytime you want. But you can’t really afford to pay for making the songs. I think in the future you’ll start to have companies maybe want to sponsor artists like they do athletes - where you give the music away for free and companies consider it advertising if it gets on the radio or on a TV commercial.

Artists will make money not from selling their music but for sort of branding their lifestyle and having other people want to fund it. But it’s interesting. The profit center’s really changing.

In 1994, Jewel entertained customers at the Innerchange Café in San Diego, California. These are the recordings from the beginning of Jewel’s career.

A number of these tracks have been heard on bootleg / lesser quality rips from previous recordings and live shows, but this is the first professional recording done of Jewel, ever.

The album contains 23 tracks total, including 21 previously unreleased tracks.

The rumours that David Blaine's latest feat of endurance, to be locked in a room for an hour with Jewel while she recited her poetry, turned out to be completely untrue - his doctors advised that it could do serious damage to his mental health.

However the Wall Street Journal reports that Jewel and David Blaine spent last weekend in Hong Kong to help celebrate the 50th birthday of businessman Bruce Rockowitz. The event was thrown by Rockowitz's girlfriend, Hong Kong pop-singer, Coco Lee. Performing at the weekend event, as well as Jewel and Blaine who both performed at a brunch show on the Saturday, were Rihanna and Lionel Richie. Among the guests were Tommy Hilfiger and British retail tycoons Philip Green and Richard Caring.

It seems that Paisley got his revenge a number of times, including the time Sweet P dropped in on Jewel. In other news, Jewel plans to release 'Till It Feels Like Cheating as her third single from Perfectly Clear in the US. Hopefully this will be more successful than the previous single, I Do, which flopped due to lack of promotion from her record company Valory Music. They now seem to be concentrating solely on their male artists. Jewel hasn't been featured on their site since back in June. Perhaps they're upset Jewel didn't invite them to her wedding.

There are still no plans to release Perfectly Clear here in the UK, however we will be seeing the release of the double DVD set Jewel: The Essential Live Songbook, which is due on the 3rd November.

My future goal is to keep the fans i have (hopefully!) And gain some new fans (hopefully!) Have some radio hits to help build fans and sell albums, make another record for the label- and then go out on my own! I wanna travel less, worry less, and make music i love. Id like to start to build a mailing list to u all, so i can just let you all directly know when i have a project or song coming out, and u can get it direct from me! Thats my dream.... If any of u want to start to ad ur names to my list, please do!! I get to put out my own record in march- no label- just me- before i do my next label album. I think it will be acoustic and more like peices of you- not alot of instraments...

I Do impacting today

Jewel's second single I Do is officially added to country radio station playlists today in the US. All Access describe it as

one of the poppiest songs on an album that is steeped in traditional Country music. With a Fleetwood-Mac'ish kind of groove, a nice hook, and light, breezy up-tempo feel, "I Do," is the perfect summer single. This should easily be her first Country Top-10

RIAA Honors Jewel For 18 Million In US Album Sales

The Recording Industry Association of America honored singer-songwriter Jewel with a career milestone plaque commemorating sales of more than 18 million albums in the U.S.

Jenny Alves, RIAA's coordinator of artist industry relations, surprised the singer Thursday at the Country Music Association festival as she prepared to sign autographs.

"This is awesome. Thank you so much," said Jewel, who also was scheduled to perform at the festival.

Jewel's two concerts which were broadcast in the US for the Soundstage show on PBS are going to be released on a double DVD called Jewel - The Essential Live Songbook on the 30th September...

"Two fantastic Jewel shows in one program! See the Utah-born pop star perform first at the Rialto Theater in Joliet, Illinois, followed by a concert given at the Myerson Symphony Center in Dallas, Texas. Jewel delivers a variety of hits from her catalog, including "You Were Meant for Me," "Foolish Games," "Good Day," and more, including a version of Cole Porter's "Anything Goes" and the classic standard "Over the Rainbow." 4 1/3 hrs. on two discs. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital 5.1."

There's no news yet on whether there will be a UK release or if this version will be region free.

CMH Records, an independent bluegrass record label, have announced that they will be releasing a Bluegrass Tribute to Jewel...

He chased me for probably (16 km), was throwing things out of his car at my car, like beer bottles, full beer bottles, trying to break my windows. He'd get in front of me and slam his brakes trying to make me rear-end him.

Jewel is returning to Nashville Star. She was the host of the show last season and will join John Rich as judge/mentor when the show premieres June 9 on NBC with host Billy Ray Cyrus.

Jewel is still out on the road promoting her new country self. On Wednesday last week, Jewel played a private concert for FM 106.1 in Milwaukee. You can see some great photos of Jewel performing on the Jewel Forum and also read this review from a new Jewel fan.

A day later, Jewel played a benefit show for St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Des Moines, Idaho. You can see some photos that photographer Lori Nordstrom took at the show on her blog.

Also, Jewel recently visited Chicago country station US*99.5 where she performed one of her Shaye Smith collaborations Love Is A Garden. You can watch Jewel performing this song along with Hands and Thump Thump on the station's website. This song was probably written around the end of 2005 and has rarely been performed in public but was apparently at one time rumoured to be on Goodbye Alice In Wonderland. I guess it might end up on Perectly Clear in June.

Brad Paisley's 2008 tour will feature Jewel, Chuck Wicks and newcomer Julianne Hough. Paisley made the announcement Wednesday night (March 5) during his performance at the Music City Jam, an event connected to the annual Country Radio Seminar taking place in Nashville this week. The Paisley Party, as the tour's called, begins June 11 in Albuquerque. Some 42 cities are already on the schedule through mid October.

Yesterday morning Jewel visited classic rock station 102.5 KZOK in Seattle where she was interviewed on the Bob Rivers show. They "were blown away by her vocals. Haha...i think i wreck! Seriously- I stink like the smelly massage lady who massaged me yesterday...(Nothings worse, right? I was getting a massage, and all the sudden I get a huge dose of sweaty arm pit...and now here I am and I MUST smell....So embarassing!) I can hear the folks in the seats across from me whispering "Is that Jewel?", as I type this...and then I imagine them saying "Is that her that SMELLS? "

Stronger Woman UK radio play & US promo update

Jewel's new single Stronger Woman received probably its first UK radio play last week when it was featured on Marie Crichton's Country Programme on BBC Radio Shropshire.

There's still no news on whether we'll get an official release of either the single or album in the UK, but it looks like Jewel will be heavily promoted in the US. As I posted previously Stronger Woman has already debuted at #50 in the country charts weeks before it's official add date, and according to the Valory Records Weekly report posted on the That's Country website "Jewel will be featured in a Clorox Wipe Out campaign will run in two consecutive issues of Country Weekly (2/25 & 3/10). Along with the two full page ads, Jewel taped a GAC segment that will run 50 times over the course of 5 weeks (2/11 – 3/30)"

There are now full versions of the radio edit and album version of Jewel's new single, Stronger Woman, on Jewel's new label website: The Valory Music Co.

Also three new live versions of Morning Song, So Close To Heaven and Cold Song have been added onto Jewel's Myspace page.

New album rumour #3

According to a recent blog post on Jewel's Myspace page, the first single from her forthcoming country album will be Stronger Woman. There are two versions of this song on the Myspace page.

Also Jewel was interviewed on the Pittsburgh country station Y108 where she stated that the new album will now be called Perfectly Clear and will be released in June. You can watch extracts from the interview at the Y108 website.

There's still no news of whether Jewel's new album will be released in the UK or anywhere else outside the US.

Three new songs added to Jewel's MySpace page

90-second clips of three new songs, Stronger Woman, Everything and I Do, have just been added to Jewel's MySpace page.

The songs are expected to be on Jewel's forthcoming country album, My Country, which is due to be released in March 2008.

Jewel has cameo in episode of CSI

Jewel will apparently be in an episode of CSI:Las Vegas which is scheduled to be broadcast next year.

In the episode Jewel will be performing the US national anthem at a rodeo event which the CSI team attend to investigate two murders. Jewel's boyfriend Ty Murray will also make an appearance.

Apparently Jewel is to make a cameo appearance in the new comedy "mock music biopic" Walk Hard which is released later this year.

According to Phoenix New Times Jewel makes an appearance "during one of the film's climactic scenes" where she "memorably yodels during the bridge" of the film's title song. More information about the film can be found at the Internet Movie Database.

Is Jewel featured on new Chicane album?

You may remember way back in December 2002 that Jewel recorded a track called Spirit for the UK dance artist Chicane. It now appears that this track has finally been released this week on Chicane's new album Somersault.

However I can't find any mention that Jewel's vocals are on this release but it does sound like her if you listen to the sample at Juno Records.

There hasn't been any news recently but here's a review of Jewel's concert last Saturday from the Salt Lake Tribune.
